September: Take Back The Night

The efforts taken by communities across Ontario to organize Take Back The Night during the month of September, and to join the marches, are one way that women and girls in Ontario are bringing awareness to the issue of violence against women.

Ontario’s first Take Back The Night event was held in 1978 in Ottawa.  In 1981, in Toronto, a Take Back The Night event was held in honour of Barbra Schlifer, who was brutally sexually assaulted and murdered on the day she was called to the Ontario Bar.

Take Back The Night is organized around the world. The events represent the courage and unity of women coming together to denounce sexual violence and to symbolically recognize the right to feel safe.

When a woman is sexually assaulted, her life, the life of her loved ones and her community are forever impacted.
