Training for Professionals on Violence Against Women
As part of the government’s Domestic Violence Action Plan, professionals and service providers are receiving training to better identify and support women and children who are at risk of violence. This training and the companion resources have been developed to meet the needs of professionals and service providers in education, health, justice and social services sectors.
To date, more than 28,000 front-line professionals and service providers have participated in these training initiatives and 98% of respondents surveyed indicated that, as a result of the training, they were better equipped to identify situations of abuse and provide appropriate supports and referrals. Programs include:
- Training programs developed by expert panels for emergency department personnel and for educators in English and French language elementary schools,
- Multi-year initiatives to train legal aid workers, probation and parole officers, violence against women service providers (English and French language), settlement service providers, Ontario Works staff, paramedics, perinatal care providers, First Nations service providers and service providers supporting women with disabilities, and to provide skills-based education for judges.
- Establishing a Violence Against Women Training Institute to better serve French speaking service providers.
Descriptions of each training initiative are provided. This information, which is organized by sector and profession, also includes key resources that can be used by other professionals and service providers who wish to expand their own domestic violence training initiatives.
