This 24-hour helpline maintains a current database of lawyers who deal with women's issues in communities throughout the province. You may call specifically for a referral or visit the Assaulted Women's Helpline website.

Femaide : Ligne d’aide et de soutien pour femmes violentées

Ce numéro provincial connectera automatiquement les femmes d’expression française à la ligne d’aide et de soutien pour femmes violentées. Les appels sont dirigés selon leur provenance vers l’une des trois lignes régionales qui existent dans la province. Ce service est gratuit et confidentiel; il est offert 24 heures par jour, 7 jours par semaine, 365 jours par an. Il offre aide, écoute, intervention en cas d’urgence et des services d’aiguillage aux femmes qui ont besoin d’un service d’hébergement, de counselling ou d’autres formes de soutien.

Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic (Toronto)

The Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic Offers free counselling, legal and interpreter services to women in the Greater Toronto Area who have experienced physical, sexual or psychological abuse.

Family Law Information Centres

Located at Family Courts in 17 areas throughout the province, Family Law Information Centres provide information on alternative dispute resolution options, and issues related to separation and divorce and child protection matters. Information about court process and other community resources are also available. Lawyer Referral Service of the Law Society of Upper Canada

This service will refer you to a lawyer who will work for you. There is a $6 charge to use the phone service. However, if you are in police custody, under the age of 18, in a shelter or are experiencing domestic violence, you can call (416) 947-3330 in the Toronto area, or toll-free at 1-800-268-8326 from elsewhere in Ontario. You will be given a half-hour free consultation, after which you can decide if you want to hire the lawyer to work for you. Assistance in other languages is available and other special needs may also be accommodated.

Legal Aid Ontario

Legal Aid Ontario offers legal services free of charge for certain cases involving child protection, custody, support, access and restraining-order issues. Legal aid staff will look at your personal financial circumstances to decide if you qualify. Every situation is different. It all depends on your family responsibilities and your monthly expenses.
