Frequently Asked Questions

These are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. You will also find detailed information for women and for organizations on this website.

Applying for a grant

How can my organization apply for a grant?
Funding is available only to non-profit organizations. Calls for submissions for specific grant programs are posted in the for organizations section of this website.

Approval of grants

My organization has applied for a grant. When will we find out if it has been approved or not?
Timelines for approval vary depending on the individual program. All successful grant recipients receive notification via a letter within the timelines stated in the application materials. All approved grant projects will also be listed in the for organizations section of this website.

Starting a business

I'm a woman interested in starting my own business. Do you have grants available to help me?
The OWD does not fund individuals or for-profit enterprises. However, the Ontario Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship has comprehensive information on government programs to help finance and grow your business. It also lists resources specifically for women in business.

Finding legal help

I can't afford a lawyer. How do I get legal aid?
Every Ontario resident who needs it can apply for legal assistance through Legal Aid Ontario. Eligibility is based on financial need and the type of case. The applicant may pay nothing or a portion of the cost, depending on their financial situation.

Re-entering the workforce

I'm a woman looking to re-enter the workforce. Where can I find help to make this transition?
Information on finding a job, becoming self-employed, or getting job-related training can be found within the Life Events section of the main Ontario government website. Your local Women’s Centre and A Commitment to Training and Employment to Women (ACTEW) may be able to provide you with further woman focused job search and training resources.

Men ending violence against women

How can men become involved in ending violence against women?
Research shows that the majority of men are uncomfortable with how they have been taught to be men, and with the sexism and inappropriate behaviour of other men. Concerned men are encouraged to contact the White Ribbon Campaign.

Information in other languages

How can I obtain copies of OWD publications in other languages, particularly your brochures and materials related to violence against women?
