$172,846 to provide intensive leadership skills development training and mentorship to 21 young Aboriginal women in remote First Nations communities in Northwestern Ontario.

Past and current Aboriginal women leaders, including chiefs and band councillors, are paired with young women to support their training and development.

The leadership training is provided to young women through three leadership camps, and will incorporate traditional teachings. Also, a forum will be held to promote Aboriginal women’s leadership.

$114,500 to work with 14 Aboriginal communities (8 First Nations and 6 urban communities), primarily located in Northeastern Ontario, in reaching out to Aboriginal women who are grandmothers and strengthening their leadership roles in their families and communities.

Activities include:

  • grandmother gatherings to promote personal healing and leadership skills development
  • the creation and distribution of a manual to provide information and tools to empower grandmothers as community leaders
  • and the development of supportive networks of grandmothers acting for positive social change.

$49,600 for a multifaceted project aimed at improving the status of women in the 49 First Nation communities in the NAN region.

This funding will support two meetings and four teleconferences per year of the NAN Women's Council to plan, oversee and evaluate this project which includes:

  • research
  • leadership development training
  • community capacity building activities
  • the establishment of community-based women’s circles
  • the production of a documentary film about the project’s progress.

$235,000 to strengthen its leadership at the provincial and local levels. Activities include:

  • the development and delivery of leadership training for ONWA Board, staff and 103 locals/member groups in 12 communities across the province
  • strategic planning to build Aboriginal women’s leadership on issues affecting them
  • improved communication linkages between ONWA’s provincial leadership and its member organizations/individuals.
