As a woman, a mother, and the Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, I am very pleased to celebrate the 31st International Women’s Day on March 8th 2008.
This day is an opportunity for all Ontarians to celebrate and recognize the women in their lives and their achievements. The Canadian theme for this year is Strong Women: Strong World. No where is that more evident than here in Ontario. Much has been achieved by women. Our influence and leadership has expanded into boardrooms, government and communities.
As we celebrate this day, let us not forget that real gender equality can only be achieved when women can live free from the threat of violence and are economically independent. The McGuinty government is working with community partners, police and health care workers to make Ontario a better place for women and their families. We’ve made investments in programs and services that help women get better paying jobs, increase their economic influence and help to end violence against women.
My thanks to all who promote and protect the rights of women. Much has been accomplished. Much remains to be done. So let us continue to work together to support women, so we can build a brighter future for all Ontarians.
Happy International Women’s Day!
Sincerely
Deb Matthews
Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues
