Support And Services For Victims Of Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence Community Coordinating Committees

Domestic Violence Community Coordinating Committees bring together various partners that serve abused women in order to coordinate and improve the effectiveness of victim support systems in a community. Currently, there are 42 such committees across Ontario.

The membership of these committees typically includes representatives from women’s service agencies (e.g., shelters, family services), the justice sector (e.g., police, Victim Witness Assistance Program, Crown attorneys), other social services such as child protection, and members from the health and education sectors.

Other Government Initiatives to Address Domestic Violence:

On April 17, 2008, the government announced $8.2 million in new funding to help ensure women who are victims of abuse and their children get help faster and are better protected from future harm:

  • $1.7 million for a new Early Victim Contact program
  • $500,000 in annual ongoing funding for the Bail Safety Program bringing their annual budget to approximately $8 million
  • $2 million to provide more annual ongoing funding for the Partner Assault Response Program and
  • $4 million in new annual funding to the province’s 79 Supervised Access program locations.

In addition, the government is providing more than $190 million annually to violence against women services. This includes a four-year, $82-million Domestic Violence Action Plan that provides community based supports, public education and training, better access to French language services and strengthens Ontario’s criminal and family justice systems.
