Getting Licensed

The licensing process will cost you time and money. Make sure you understand how it works so that you can make good choices about applying. Here are the common questions people ask about getting licensed. The answers tell you how to enter a profession in Ontario.

What is a regulated profession?

In Ontario, some professions set their own standards of practice. These are called regulated professions. They set standards to protect the public.

What is a regulatory body?

A regulatory body is a group that creates the standards and practices of a profession. For example, the College of Nurses of Ontario makes sure that its members are qualified to do a nurse’s job. They also make sure that members keep up their qualifications.

What do regulatory bodies do?

Regulatory bodies make sure that their members meet certain standards of practice. They have the authority to:

  • Set entry and training requirements
  • Set standards of practice
  • Assess qualifications
  • Register qualified applicants
  • Discipline members.

What do I need to start working in my profession in Ontario?

First, apply to the organization that regulates your profession. They will assess your qualifications. If you qualify, they will license, register, or certify you to practice your profession in Ontario.

Can I work in my profession without registering?

It is against the law, in some professions, to work or use the title of the profession if you are not registered with the regulatory body.

In other professions, you can do the work of the profession such as accounting, but you must register if you want to use the title of a chartered accountant for example.

Other professions are not regulated by law, but have professional organizations.  Some of these organizations provide certification courses and registration. Membership in these organizations is not required. But membership may help you get work in your profession.

Do my documents have to be in English?

Your education or certification documents must be available in English. Some community settlement agencies will translate your documents for free. The Settlement.org website can help you find a service near you.

Private translation companies will charge a fee. You can find these translation services in the yellow pages of your phone book. Look under translation.

Do I need to know English to be certified?

Yes, you need to know English. Most regulatory bodies give exams in English only.  Some may offer exams in both French and English.

Can I work right away?

No. Before you can work, the regulatory body must assess your qualifications. They may also ask you for a resume to assess your work experience.

In most cases, you will have to write one or more exams. You may also have to take some added education.
