Ryerson University

Internationally Educated Social Work Professionals (IESW) Certificate in Canadian Social Work Practice

This program provides learning and support services, including language and communications proficiency testing, an assessment and referral process, and placement and mentoring opportunities for internationally trained social workers.

The program has recently added new courses for both classroom and online delivery are offered in counselling skills, workplace writing and documentation and occupation-specific language, while 2-3 existing curriculum modules are being adapted for distance learning.

Pre-arrival Services

Before you come to Ontario, you can learn what you need to do to earn your Social Work Professional designation with Ryerson’s online pre-arrival services.

Online self-assessment tool

Ryerson is currently developing an online self-assessment tool that allows you to compare your current skills and experience with what is required for you to work professionally as a social worker in Ontario.

The Working Centre

Social Work in Waterloo Region

This is a 6-month program to prepare internationally educated workers for registration or employment in social work and related fields.

The program includes:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Sector Specific Training Information and Counselling, and
  • Mandatory work placement

Participants also receive help in developing a plan to secure a license and/or work in their field.
