Improved College/University Access

George Brown College

Colleges Integrating Immigrants to Employment (CIITE) Project

The “Colleges Integrating Immigrants to Employment” (CIITE) project will help internationally-trained individuals (ITIs) by developing and piloting improved processes, programs and services for the integration of ITIs within the Ontario college system.

Phase I, completed in March 2005, identified barriers faced by ITIs in the college system and developed an implementation plan to pilot test these revised pathways during Phase II of the initiative. During Phase II, pilots are being undertaken in five areas:

  1. Admissions
  2. Advisement models
  3. Credential assessment and advanced standing
  4. Language proficiency (assessment)
  5. Employment preparation.

Council of Ontario Universities

Foreign Trained Professionals in Ontario Universities Project

The “Foreign Trained Professionals in Ontario Universities” project is working to improve access to the Ontario provincial university system by ITIs who need the academic credentials necessary for licensure, registration or certification in their chosen profession.

  • Phase one: consisted of research and consultations, and was designed to investigate key barriers to the effective integration of immigrants with international training into the university sector. This phase included consultations with key associations that work with skilled immigrants, as well as consultations with internationally trained professionals and universities.
  • Phase two: is focused on developing approaches and pilot projects to address issues identified in Phase one.
  • Phase three: will involve the dissemination of these approaches throughout the university sector.

Systemic Changes Supporting Flexible Program Delivery in Ontario Colleges

This CON*NECT project will assist Ontario colleges to collaboratively address systemic barriers faced by internationally trained individuals (ITIs). It will enable colleges to provide flexible program delivery options to allow ITIs to complete only those courses or training they need to fill specific gaps in their skills, knowledge or Canadian workplace experience.

This project is related to the George Brown College project entitled "Colleges Integrating Immigrants to Employment" (CIITE), currently in Phase 2, which addresses Advisement, Admissions, Language Proficiency Assessment, Credential Assessment and Advanced Standing and Employment Preparation in the Ontario College system. Outcomes for this project will be integrated with other CIITE Phase 2 work currently underway.  The CIITE Phase 2 final report, due March 31, 2008, will comprise a comprehensive plan for all Ontario colleges to provide improved pathways to employment for ITIs, to be rolled out in a third phase.

George Brown College

Occupation Specific Language Profiles

This project will pilot research and evaluation of the language curriculum for two non-regulated occupation courses offered by George Brown College. The program will identify the gaps between language levels required for employment success and those currently addressed by the curriculum.  The goal of the project is to use this research to create language curriculum that better equips participants with the language skills required for their occupation.

The development of occupation-specific language profiles will provide students with a clear picture of required language skills, while also establishing a benchmark against which the current curriculum can be evaluated.  CLB testing will help determine the language proficiency of students enrolled in George Brown’s courses by providing a more accurate picture of the language skills participants will develop through coursework.  The results will assist in the modification of the curriculum to better meet industry language requirements.  The processes and structures resulting from this project will help extend this research broadly across George Brown’s programs.
