Accessible Community Counselling and Employment Services (ACCES)

Engineering Connections

This project is a specialized six-week job search program to help internationally trained engineers (ITEs) bridge into employment in their field or into a related field. It includes:

  • Labour market research to match labour market demand with availability of skills
  • Targeted recruitment of potential project participants
  • Screening and assessment (including employer review and referral services) to ensure that participants have the necessary communication and technical skills
  • Language assessment to ensure applicants meet a minimum proficiency level
  • Six-week training module with a focus on orientation to the engineering  profession, skills enhancement, communication, licensing, and what employers expect
  • Job search and work placement support.

Chinese Professionals Association of Canada (CPAC)

Mentoring for Professional Engineering Licensure

This project will help 120 international engineering graduates work toward a professional license with Professional Engineers Ontario.  Participants will receive:

  • In-depth information on the application process to PEO
  • Assessment of their language skills
  • Language training for the engineering profession
  • Training in job search strategies.

Participants will be matched with an established professional engineer for mentoring. Mentoring sessions will allow mentors and participants to identify problems, develop goals and plans, and work toward successful entry into the profession.

Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning

Engineering Connections: Software Skills Enhancement Project

This project helps internationally trained civil, mechanical and electrical engineers prepare for employment in Ontario. Over 14 weeks, you will learn the engineering software used in the Canadian engineering industry. You will also have access to assessment and advising services, and job development and job search supports.

Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE)

Examination Skills Preparation for Internationally Trained Engineers

This program is for internationally trained engineers who wish to be licenced as an engineer in Ontario. The course will prepare you to write the Professional Practice Examination (PPE).  You will learn:

  • the role and the context of exam writing in Canada
  • the legal and ethical practice in the workplace and
  • what technical information you need to pass the exam.

Ryerson University: Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science

Internationally Educated Engineers Qualification Bridging Program

This program provides participants with the opportunity to successfully complete the academic qualifications requirements for professional engineering licensure in Ontario. Participants will enter one of two streams – an advanced standing admission into the third year of one of the seven engineering programs offered at Ryerson, or a personalized academic program.
The project is also establishing an Office of Internationally Educated Engineers that will provide services including:

  • Direct links with the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
  • Direct connections to academic programs
  • Intense pre-entry to program advanced language training
  • Canadian professional experience through a four-month co-op program.

Through the co-op placement, participants will gain paid engineering employment experience, develop contacts, and apply the knowledge gained in their university courses.

Engineering Bridges

This project will help 120 internationally trained engineers get employment in their field and licensure by offering them courses in occupation-specific language, workplace culture and communications, technical skills, and exam preparation. The project will also provide internships and paid employment.

Engineering Your Future

This project assists over 300 internationally trained engineers and engineering technologists/technicians with training in computer skills and occupation-specific language, navigating the license process, mentorship, work experience and employment services.

Toronto and Region Conservation Authority

Professional Access and Integration Program

This program is a 3-month workshop and a 12-month work placement for 40 internationally trained environmental engineers.

Workshops will include training on:

  • Occupation-specific language and workplace culture/communication (Enhanced Language Training)
  • Technical standards
  • Ontario engineering/environmental regulations, and
  • Licensing information

The workshop is followed by a full-time, 12-month work placement to satisfy licensing requirements with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

The project will also deliver diversity workshops for host organization employers to provide them with diversity training and employee placement support.
