Career and Work Counsellor Bridging Program

The “Career and Work Counsellor Bridging Program” helps internationally-trained individuals enter the employment counselling profession in Ontario. Modified from a two-year existing program at George Brown College, this program is tailored to the needs of internationally trained individuals with higher-level English language training and support. It also provides Canadian work experience through an observation and two work placements. Graduates meet the requirements for certification from the Canadian National Standards and Guidelines for Career Counsellors.

Mentoring Works!

This project will match people who were trained internationally with mentors who work in their field in Ontario. The program starts with a recruitment, screening and orientation process. Mentors then meet with participants for one hour per week, over four months. These mentoring sessions provide participants with help and information about:
  • Canadian workplace practices
  • Language for specific occupations
  • Labour market opportunities and requirements for the participant’s field
  • Skills required for employment in the participant’s field
  • Job searching and self-marketing skills
  • Preparing for employment
  • Industry trends and developments.

Newcomer Employment and Work Skills (NEWS)

This project will help 384 people who were trained internationally to find employment. Through the project, WoodGreen will provide a ‘one-window’ service for participants, including:
  • Assessment
  • Language training (workplace, cultural, and occupation-specific)
  • Mentoring
  • Job support.

WoodGreen will work with each participant to design an individual employment pathway, taking advantage of a participant’s most marketable skills. Training will be tailored to meet the requirements of existing jobs. WoodGreen will also work closely with employers, human resource coordinators, job centres and employment agencies to develop the most up-to-date services.

Peel Region Employment Preparation (PREP)

This project helps newcomers deal with the difficulties they often experience in ‘soft skills’ such as communicating in a Canadian workplace and culture. The project will provide:
  • Nine weeks of occupation-specific courses in one of the three sectors: engineering, IT, or supply chain management
  • Knowledge of workplace practices
  • Job search skills
  • Employment placement

The program will also help newcomers find employment by actively promoting graduates of the program to area employers.
