As we all know, rapid change is a fact of life, especially in the world of Internet technology. This guide was developed in 1998, and some of the information herein may appear outdated, or no longer be valid. Please take note of this when accessing this document.
The Government of Ontario is committed to promoting volunteerism among Ontarians, recognizing the contributions of volunteers, and helping volunteer organizations share information and expertise through the use of technology -- especially the Internet and the World Wide Web. This publication, Moving Your Group Online, is part of that commitment.
Computer-assisted communication has been compared to the invention of the printing press, the telephone and television. Internet and World Wide Web access are powerful tools that can assist your organization to operate more efficiently and effectively. They also offer opportunities for growth. Expanding your organization's technological capabilities can be an important step in achieving self-reliance and continuing to provide the valuable services that help support our communities. But you need to plan ahead to ensure you make the most of the technology that is available to you.
Moving Your Group Online is an easy-to-follow guide that will help you get started on the Internet. Developed for the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration by Web Networks, a non-profit Internet Service Provider working in the voluntary sector, this publication will answer many of your questions. As you advance through this guide, a variety of options will be presented for you and your group to consider in planning your strategy.
Once your group is online, having access to the Internet and the World Wide Web will make a wide variety of opportunities available for working more effectively. Working collaboratively with other organizations may be just one of those options.
