Specialized Language Training For Newcomers
October 27, 2010 Backgrounder
Ontario has invested $4.3 million, over three years (2009-2012), to provide specialized language training to approximately 3,800 newcomers.
Since 2006, nearly $10 million has been invested in 81 specialized language training projects to help 7,800 newcomers learn the language of their workplace or profession.
The training helps newcomers strengthen their language skills so they can get jobs that reflect their qualifications or perform their existing jobs more effectively.
Sixteen school boards are offering the specialized language training, in partnership with employers, in classroom settings or in the workplace.
The Halton District School Board has trained 92 newcomers and partnered with 10 employers since its program began in January 2010 and will help an estimated total of 650 newcomers over the three year program.
The training addresses learners’ language barriers while responding to the needs of employers in a number of sectors, including:
- Accounting, business and finance
- Information technology
- Engineering and manufacturing
- Health care and pharmaceutical
- Hospitality and tourism
