The June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Awards for Voluntarism recognize individuals and groups that have made an exceptional contribution to volunteerism in Ontario.

About June Callwood

June Rose Callwood, CC, O.Ont, LL.D was a Canadian journalist, author and social activist. She was born in Chatham, Ontario in 1924 and grew up in nearby Belle River. She passed away in April, 2007.

Her life was marked by a strong concern for social justice, especially on issues affecting children and women. Callwood was one of Canada's most famous social justice activists, founding or co-founding over 50 Canadian social action organizations including youth and women's hostels. She founded Casey House (1988), a Toronto hospice for people with AIDS; PEN Canada, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and Feminists Against Censorship.

Who are the award recipients?

These awards recognize individual volunteers, volunteer groups, businesses and other organizations for outstanding contributions to their communities and the province.  Often, these award recipients have shown exceptional leadership, innovation and creativity. Only 20 recipients are chosen each year.

Who can receive this award?

This award is given to individuals as well as groups. Groups eligible for the award may include:

  • Not-for-profit and non-profit organizations and associations
  • Co-operatives
  • Boards and commissions
  • Businesses
  • Government ministries that recruit volunteers
  • Arts, educational and correctional institutions and schools
  • Municipalities
  • Long-term care homes and hospitals

How are recipients selected?

Five to seven people make up an independent selection committee which is appointed by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. They review the nominations and choose up to 20 recipients. The committee includes a wide range of individuals with varied backgrounds.

How are the awards presented?

The June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Awards for Voluntarism in Ontario are presented by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration at a special ceremony in April during National Volunteer Week.

Can I nominate someone?

Yes, individuals and organizations can make a nomination.

When is the deadline?

Nomination forms may be submitted at any time. The deadline is January 15 of each year. All nominations received after this date will be considered for the following year.

How should nominations be submitted?

Nominations are usually accepted between November and the end of January each year. When nominations are being accepted for this year, you will find a nomination form on this website in both PDF and HTML formats.
