What is Active Citizenship?

Gregory Kazmierski - Award recipient

Active citizenship is at the core of our way of life in Ontario. The many people in this province who volunteer in our communities have a crucial impact on our quality of life, on our economic strength and on our social well-being. They contribute to the cultural richness and diversity that have made Ontario a model for the world. And they make Ontario an attractive place in which to live, work and invest. They are worthy of recognition.

We depend on and value the dedication of almost five million volunteers in our communities and on organizations that help all of us. Volunteers lead and support more than 45,000 nonprofit organizations. They deliver services that are the foundation of strong, dynamic and supportive communities.

The Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade provides many programs and services to promote individual volunteering and to support the nonprofit sector in Ontario.

In addition, through our Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat, Ontario proudly hosts a wide variety of honours, awards and recognition programs and ceremonies that recognize our volunteers and their work and contributions in communities across Ontario.
